Synopsis – What to Expect from “Undefeated”
Undefeated is a 2011 documentary film that follows three students from Manassas High School in Memphis, Tennessee, as they join their football team, the Manassas Tigers, during the 2009 season. The team is made up of players from the inner city who are largely ignored by the local football establishment.
The film follows the team as they struggle to overcome their lack of resources and poor record to become the first team from inner-city Memphis to make it to the state playoffs in a decade. We get to know the players and follow their journey as they attempt to overcome poverty, crime, and the expectations of those around them in order to succeed.
The team is coached by Bill Courtney, a volunteer coach who has dedicated his life to helping these young men reach their potential. He pushes them to be better, not just on the field, but in their lives. He helps them to understand the importance of education, respect, and the power of perseverance.
The team’s journey is filled with highs and lows. We see them overcome their own doubts and fears, as well as the doubts of their peers and the community. We witness their struggles and triumphs as they fight to make it to the playoffs.
