Synopsis/Plot
Unbroken is a 2014 American biographical sports drama film directed by Angelina Jolie and written by the Coen brothers, Richard LaGravenese and William Nicholson. It is based on the 2010 non-fiction book by Laura Hillenbrand, Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption. The film tells the incredible true story of Olympic runner and United States Army Air Forces bombardier, Louis Zamperini (Jack O’Connell).
The film follows Zamperini’s life from his childhood in Torrance, California to his participation in the 1936 Berlin Olympics, and then his enlistment in the United States Army Air Forces during World War II. After surviving a plane crash in the Pacific Ocean, Zamperini and two other crew members are stranded on a raft in the middle of the ocean. They endure extreme hardships, including shark attacks, starvation, and aerial bombardments by Japanese fighter planes, for 47 days before being taken prisoner by the Japanese Navy.
Zamperini is then sent to a series of prisoner-of-war camps in Japan, where he is subjected to physical and psychological torture. Despite the adversity, Zamperini remains resilient and determined to survive
