It follows two nomadic car freaks, the Driver and the Mechanic, who travel across the United States in a 1955 Chevrolet. Along the way, they meet GTO, a middle-aged man who challenges them to a cross-country race from the East Coast to the West Coast.
The Driver and the Mechanic are two young men who are obsessed with cars. They travel across the country in their 1955 Chevrolet, living a nomadic lifestyle and making money by street racing. The Driver and the Mechanic accept the challenge and begin their journey.
During the race, the Driver and the Mechanic encounter a variety of people, from a young hitchhiker to a group of hippies. They also face a number of obstacles, including a police chase and a breakdown of their car. As the race progresses, the Driver and the Mechanic become increasingly competitive and their friendship begins to suffer.
