The film begins in a remote village in French Indochina in the 1920s. Two cubs, Kumal and Sangha, are born to a tigress in the jungle. They are soon separated when Sangha is sold to a circus, while Kumal is adopted by a farmer and his family.
Years later, the farmer’s son, Raoul, has grown up and is now a hunter. He comes across Sangha in the circus and is immediately drawn to him. He returns to the village and tells his family about his discovery. They decide to buy Sangha and reunite him with Kumal.
When the brothers meet, they immediately recognize each other and are overjoyed to be reunited. However, their reunion is short-lived as they are soon captured by poachers. The brothers are taken to a nearby temple, where they are locked up in cages.
