Synopsis – What to Expect from “Twelve O’Clock High”
Twelve O’Clock High is a 1949 American war film about air combat during World War II, directed by Henry King and starring Gregory Peck and Hugh Marlowe. The film tells the story of the 918th Bombardment Group of the U.S. Army Air Forces, stationed in England, and their commander, Brigadier General Frank Savage (Peck).
The film opens with the 918th’s commander, Colonel Keith Davenport (Gary Merrill) being relieved of command due to his inability to cope with the strain of the war. His replacement is Savage, a West Point graduate and veteran of the Spanish-American War. Savage is initially unpopular with the men of the 918th, who resent his strict discipline and by-the-book approach to combat.
Savage soon proves himself to be a capable leader and earns the respect of the men. He begins to crack down on the lax discipline of the unit and begins to implement a rigorous training program. This leads to a series of successful missions, culminating in a daring daylight raid on a heavily defended German target.
The mission is a success, but the 918th suffers heavy losses. Savage is forced to make the difficult decision to order his men to abandon their damaged aircraft rather than risk their lives trying to land them. The men are deeply affected by the decision, but come to respect Savage for his courage and leadership.
