Synopsis – What to Expect from “Trust the Man”
Trust the Man is a romantic comedy released in 2005. The movie follows the lives of two couples, Tom (David Duchovny) and Rebecca (Julianne Moore) and Tobey (Billy Crudup) and Elaine (Maggie Gyllenhaal).
Tom and Rebecca are married with two kids and are in a bit of a rut. Tom is a successful ad executive who is too wrapped up in work and Rebecca is an overwhelmed stay-at-home mom who is feeling neglected. When Rebecca’s old college flame, Julian (Garrett Hedlund), shows up in town, her relationship with Tom is tested.
Tobey and Elaine are also married and have been together for eight years. On the surface, they seem to have the perfect relationship. But Tobey is a commitment-phobe who is scared of taking the next step. He keeps Elaine at arm’s length, and she is frustrated and unfulfilled.
The two couples’ stories intertwine as they navigate the ups and downs of relationships. Tom and Rebecca must decide if they can still trust each other and find a way to rekindle their spark. Tobey and Elaine must decide if they are willing to take the next step. Through it all, the couples must learn to trust each other and themselves.
