Synopsis – What to Expect from “Transamerica”
Transamerica is a 2005 American comedy-drama film about a transsexual woman, Bree, who embarks on a road trip with her long-lost teenage son.
The film begins with Bree (Felicity Huffman) undergoing her final sex reassignment surgery. After the surgery, Bree receives a call from Toby (Kevin Zegers), a teenage boy who claims to be her son. Bree is shocked to discover that Toby is the son she gave up for adoption 17 years ago. Toby is in trouble with the law and needs money to pay off his bail. Bree agrees to help him and the two set off on a road trip from Los Angeles to New York.
Along the way, Bree and Toby experience a range of emotions as they get to know each other and deal with the issues of their past. They also meet a variety of characters, such as Bree’s therapist (Elizabeth Peña) and her ex-girlfriend (Fionnula Flanagan).
As the two travel, they slowly begin to accept each other and their differences. Toby learns to accept his mother for who she is, while Bree learns to accept her son for who he is.
In the end, Toby is able to pay off his bail and the two part ways. Bree returns to Los Angeles, while Toby continues on to New York. The film ends with Bree reflecting on her life and the journey she has taken.
