Synopsis/Plot
Tootsie is a 1982 American comedy film directed by Sydney Pollack and starring Dustin Hoffman in a cross-dressing role. The film tells the story of Michael Dorsey, an out-of-work actor who, desperate for a job, disguises himself as a woman to get a role on a soap opera. Through his alter-ego, Dorothy Michaels, he finds both professional and personal success, but also learns the importance of being true to oneself.
The film follows Michael’s journey as he struggles to make ends meet and keep his identity a secret. After numerous unsuccessful auditions, Michael’s agent George Fields (played by George Gaynes) suggests that Michael consider auditioning for a female role on the soap opera Southwest General. With no other options, Michael agrees and is hired for the role of Dorothy Michaels.
Despite his initial reservations, Michael soon finds success playing the role of Dorothy and is even nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award. He also finds himself in a romantic relationship with his co-star, Julie Nichols (played by Jessica Lange). As Dorothy, Michael discovers a newfound confidence and appreciation for the struggles of women in the workplace.
