Synopsis – What to Expect from “Too Big to Fail”
Too Big to Fail is a 2011 HBO television movie based on the book of the same name by Andrew Ross Sorkin. The film chronicles the 2008 financial crisis and the actions taken by the U.S. government and Wall Street bankers to prevent the collapse of the global financial system.
The movie opens with the collapse of the investment bank Lehman Brothers in September 2008. As the news of the bankruptcy spreads, the world’s financial markets begin to plummet and the U.S. government scrambles to find a solution.
Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson (William Hurt) and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke (Paul Giamatti) meet with the CEOs of the major Wall Street banks in an effort to come up with a plan to rescue the financial system. Paulson and Bernanke propose a $700 billion bailout plan, but the banks are reluctant to accept it.
Meanwhile, as the crisis deepens, the government is forced to take drastic action to prevent the collapse of other major banks. In a dramatic scene, Paulson and Bernanke convince the CEOs of Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley to accept a government bailout.
The film follows the story of the bailout as it is debated in Congress and eventually passed. The movie also follows the personal stories of the people involved in the crisis, including the bankers and government officials.
