Synopsis/Plot
Tolkien is a 2019 biopic about the life of the renowned author and philologist J.R.R. Tolkien. Directed by Dome Karukoski, the film stars Nicholas Hoult as the titular character and follows his life from his childhood in the English countryside to his early days as an Oxford professor.
The film begins with a young Tolkien living with his widowed mother in the countryside. He has two close friends, Robert and Geoffrey, and they form a close bond of friendship. After his mother’s death, Tolkien moves to a boarding school in Birmingham, where he meets Edith Bratt, a fellow student who quickly becomes his best friend and later his wife.
Tolkien’s passion for language and mythology leads him to Oxford, where he studies philology and literature. There, he is encouraged by his professor, Joseph Wright, to pursue his passion for writing and mythology. Tolkien’s love for language and literature leads him to create his own mythology, which he calls “Middle-earth”.
