Synopsis – What to Expect from “To Be or Not to Be”

To Be or Not to Be is a 1942 black comedy film directed by Ernst Lubitsch and starring Carole Lombard and Jack Benny. The film follows a troupe of Polish actors as they struggle to survive amidst the Nazi invasion of their homeland during World War II.

The film opens in Warsaw, Poland, where the popular theater troupe of Josef Tura (Jack Benny) and Maria Tura (Carole Lombard) are performing their latest play, “Gestapo.” As the Nazis invade the city, the troupe is forced to flee, leaving their theater behind.

The troupe makes their way to a small village, where they are taken in by a sympathetic Polish family. While there, they decide to use their acting skills to help the Polish resistance by impersonating Nazi officers in order to gather intelligence.

Josef and Maria’s plan is successful, and they are able to acquire valuable information about the Nazi forces. However, their plan is put in jeopardy when a Gestapo officer (Sig Ruman) arrives in the village and begins to suspect that the Turas are not who they say they are.

With the help of their Polish hosts, the Turas escape from the village and make their way back to Warsaw. Once there, they use their newfound knowledge of the Nazi forces to help the Polish resistance in their fight against the invaders.
