Synopsis – What to Expect from “Titus”
Titus is a 1999 drama film directed by Julie Taymor and adapted from William Shakespeare’s revenge tragedy, Titus Andronicus. The film stars Anthony Hopkins as Titus, a Roman general who returns to Rome from a decade-long war and is soon caught in a cycle of violence and revenge.
The film begins with Titus (Hopkins) returning to Rome after defeating the Goths in a decade-long war. He is greeted with a hero’s welcome and is soon appointed as the new emperor of Rome. However, his joy is short-lived as his sons are killed in battle and his daughter, Lavinia (Jessica Lange), is raped and mutilated by the Goths.
In his grief, Titus decides to take revenge and orders the execution of the Goths’ Queen Tamora (Laura Fraser) and her sons. This leads to a cycle of violence and revenge, as Tamora’s husband, the Goth king, vows to take revenge on Titus and his family.
Titus’ revenge plot is further complicated by the machinations of his own sons, who plot to overthrow him and take power for themselves. Meanwhile, Titus’ daughter, Lavinia, is left mute and traumatized by her ordeal and is unable to communicate her feelings or tell anyone what happened to her.
The film culminates in a bloody and violent confrontation between Titus and the Goth king, in which Titus is ultimately victorious. In the aftermath
