Synopsis/Plot
This Is It is a 2009 documentary-concert film directed by Kenny Ortega that captures the rehearsals of Michael Jackson’s planned concert series of the same name. The film follows Jackson’s final months of preparation for the concerts, which were scheduled to take place in London’s O2 Arena from July 2009 to March 2010.
Using rehearsal footage from the Staples Center in Los Angeles, the film features Jackson’s final performance of songs such as “Thriller,” “Smooth Criminal,” “Bad,” and “The Way You Make Me Feel,” as well as a selection of lesser-known songs from Jackson’s back catalogue. Jackson is seen talking to the dancers and musicians, and giving instructions to the production crew.
The film also features interviews with Jackson’s friends, family, and collaborators, including choreographer Travis Payne, music director Michael Bearden, and Jackson’s brothers Tito, Marlon, and Jackie. The interviews provide insight into Jackson’s creative process and his dedication to the shows.
