Synopsis – What to Expect from “This Gun for Hire”
This Gun for Hire is a classic 1942 crime thriller, directed by Frank Tuttle and starring Alan Ladd and Veronica Lake.
The movie follows a professional hitman, Philip Raven (Alan Ladd), who is hired by a mysterious criminal mastermind to kill a scientist. Although Raven is a cold-blooded killer, he is also a highly principled man and refuses to kill the scientist’s innocent daughter.
Meanwhile, the police are on the trail of Raven and his mysterious employer. Raven is pursued by a detective, Michael Crane (Robert Preston), who is determined to bring him to justice. Raven is also pursued by a mysterious woman, Ellen Graham (Veronica Lake), who is determined to get revenge on Raven for killing her brother.
Raven eventually discovers that his employer is actually a corrupt businessman, Mr. Wilshire (Laird Cregar). Wilshire is planning to use the scientist’s invention for his own nefarious purposes, and he is willing to do anything to get it.
Raven is forced to choose between his moral code and his job, and ultimately decides to help the police. With the help of Detective Crane and Ellen, Raven is able to bring Wilshire to justice. In the end, Ellen and Raven fall in love and live happily ever after.
