Synopsis – What to Expect from “They Were Expendable”
They Were Expendable is a 1945 war drama directed by John Ford and starring Robert Montgomery and John Wayne. The film follows the story of the PT-boat crews of the United States Navy during World War II.
The film begins in the Philippines in the early days of World War II. Lt. John Brickley (Robert Montgomery) and Lt. Rusty Ryan (John Wayne) are assigned to lead a squadron of PT boats in the defense of the Philippines. Despite their best efforts, the squadron is soon overwhelmed by the Japanese forces, and they are forced to retreat.
As the war progresses, Brickley and Ryan are assigned to various operations, including the defense of the Philippines, the evacuation of Allied forces from the Philippines, and the defense of the island of Corregidor. Despite their best efforts, the American forces are eventually forced to surrender.
After the surrender, Brickley and Ryan are sent to a Japanese prison camp. While in the camp, they witness the brutality of the Japanese guards and the suffering of their fellow prisoners. Eventually, they are released and sent back to the United States.
Once back in the United States, Brickley and Ryan are assigned to a new mission: to lead a squadron of PT boats in the Pacific theater. This time, their mission is to disrupt the Japanese supply lines and provide support for the Allied forces. Despite their best efforts, the squadron is eventually overwhelmed by the Japanese forces and they are forced to retreat
