Synopsis – What to Expect from “They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?”
They Shoot Horses, Don’t They? is a 1969 film directed by Sydney Pollack and starring Jane Fonda and Michael Sarrazin. The movie tells the story of a small-time con artist, Robert Syverton (Sarrazin), and a determined young woman, Gloria Beatty (Fonda), who enter a grueling dance marathon in Los Angeles during the Great Depression.
The film begins with Gloria arriving in Los Angeles, determined to make a fresh start for herself. She meets Robert at the dance marathon, and the two of them decide to enter the competition. The dance marathon is a grueling competition, with couples dancing for days on end in the hopes of winning a large cash prize.
As the competition wears on, the couples begin to drop out one by one. Gloria and Robert remain determined, but the competition takes its toll on them both. Robert becomes increasingly depressed and desperate, while Gloria begins to lose her will to go on.
The competition eventually comes to a head when Robert and Gloria are the last couple standing. The two of them are exhausted and ready to give up, but they make one last attempt to win the competition. In the end, they are unable to win, and Robert shoots Gloria in a fit of desperation.
