Synopsis – What to Expect from “They Died with Their Boots On”
They Died with Their Boots On is a 1941 American Western war film directed by Raoul Walsh and starring Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland. The film is a highly fictionalized account of the life and career of George Armstrong Custer.
The movie begins with a young George Armstrong Custer (Errol Flynn) graduating from West Point in 1861 and being assigned to the Union Army at the beginning of the American Civil War. Custer is quickly promoted to the rank of General and assigned to the Michigan Cavalry. He quickly proves himself to be a brave and capable leader, and his troops come to love and respect him.
After the war, Custer is assigned to the Western frontier and is tasked with protecting settlers from Native American tribes. He is soon sent to the Battle of the Little Bighorn, where he and his troops are outnumbered and outgunned by the Sioux and Cheyenne. Custer and his men fight bravely, but they are eventually defeated and Custer is killed.
The film then follows Custer’s widow, Elizabeth (Olivia de Havilland), as she visits the site of the battle and meets with the Native Americans who fought against Custer. She learns about Custer’s bravery and courage in the face of certain death, and the film ends with her honoring the memory of her late husband.
