The story begins with Richard having drinks with his friend, District Attorney Frank Lalor. Richard is bored with his life and wishes for something more exciting. He notices a beautiful woman in the window across the street and becomes obsessed with her.
He decides to investigate and finds out that she is Alice Reed, a woman with a shady past. He visits her and discovers that she is being blackmailed by a man named G. G. Sargent. Richard decides to help her out and gets involved in a dangerous game of cat and mouse.
