Synopsis – What to Expect from “The Way”
The Way is a 2010 drama film directed by Emilio Estevez and starring Martin Sheen, who also co-wrote the script with his son, Emilio Estevez. The film follows Tom (Martin Sheen), an American doctor who comes to St. Jean Pied de Port, France to collect the remains of his adult son, Daniel (Emilio Estevez), who was killed in the Pyrenees in a storm while walking the Camino de Santiago, also known as The Way of St. James.
Tom, who is a middle-aged ophthalmologist from California, is an atheist and has no knowledge of the pilgrimage that his son was taking. He meets some of the people that Daniel had met on the Camino and hears stories of his son’s journey. He also meets a young Dutchman, Joost (Yorick van Wageningen), who was with Daniel when he died, and they form a bond.
Tom decides to take up the challenge of completing the pilgrimage that his son had started, and embarks on the 500-mile journey across the Pyrenees. Along the way, he meets a variety of people, each with their own stories and motivations for walking the Camino.
