Synopsis – What to Expect from “The War”
The War is a 1994 drama film directed by Jon Avnet and starring Kevin Costner, Elijah Wood, and Mare Winningham.
The War follows the story of a young boy, Stephen (Elijah Wood), who lives in a small Mississippi town in the late 1960s. Stephen and his family are struggling to make ends meet, and his father, Stan (Kevin Costner), is a veteran of the Vietnam War who is struggling with PTSD.
When Stephen’s older brother, David (Lexi Randall), is drafted to fight in the Vietnam War, Stephen and his family are devastated. Stan is particularly affected, as he remembers too well the horrors of war. He takes it upon himself to try to protect his sons and keep them safe.
Meanwhile, Stephen finds solace in a local junkyard, where he meets a group of misfits who become his friends. Together, they build a treehouse and explore the junkyard, creating their own world away from the war.
As the war continues to rage on, Stephen and his friends must face the reality of the conflict and its effects on their lives. They must also grapple with the fact that their beloved brother is in harm’s way.
