Synopsis – What to Expect from “The Vanishing”
The Vanishing is a 1993 psychological thriller directed by George Sluizer and starring Jeff Bridges, Kiefer Sutherland, and Nancy Travis.
The story follows Rex (Bridges), a man who is desperate to find out what happened to his girlfriend, Diane (Travis), who mysteriously disappeared three years ago. He begins to receive postcards from her kidnapper, Raymond (Sutherland), who tells Rex that if he wants to find out what happened to Diane, he must follow his instructions.
Rex follows Raymond’s instructions and meets him at a remote gas station in the middle of nowhere. Raymond reveals to Rex that he has been keeping Diane in a cellar in his home and that he has been drugging her in order to keep her docile. He also tells Rex that if he wants to save Diane, he must do exactly what he says.
Raymond gives Rex a bottle of pills and tells him to take them. Rex takes the pills and passes out. When he wakes up, he finds himself in the cellar with Diane. Raymond reveals that he has been drugging Rex as well and that he will only release them if Rex agrees to take Diane’s place in the cellar.
Rex is horrified but agrees to the deal. Raymond releases them and tells Rex that he must never tell anyone what happened. Rex and Diane escape and drive away, but are pursued by Raymond who is determined to keep them from revealing the truth.
