Synopsis/Plot
The Trial of the Chicago 7 is a 2020 American historical drama film written and directed by Aaron Sorkin. It is based on the 1969 trial of seven defendants charged by the federal government with conspiracy and crossing state lines with the intent to incite a riot at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago.
The film follows the trial of Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin, Tom Hayden, Rennie Davis, David Dellinger, John Froines, Lee Weiner, and Bobby Seale. The defendants were anti-Vietnam War protesters who had come to Chicago to protest the Democratic National Convention. The trial was marked by constant chaos and disruption from the defendants, who were determined to make their voices heard.
The film stars Sacha Baron Cohen as Abbie Hoffman, Eddie Redmayne as Tom Hayden, Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Richard Schultz, Mark Rylance as William Kunstler, Michael Keaton as Ramsey Clark, Frank Langella as Judge Julius Hoffman, and John Carroll Lynch as David Dellinger.
