Synopsis – What to Expect from “The Tempest”
The Tempest is a 2010 fantasy film directed by Julie Taymor, based on the play of the same name by William Shakespeare.
The film takes place on a remote island in the Mediterranean Sea, where the exiled Duke of Milan, Prospero (Helen Mirren), and her daughter Miranda (Felicity Jones) live in exile. Prospero is a powerful sorceress, and she uses her magic to control the elements, creating storms and controlling the spirits of the island.
The story begins when a group of shipwrecked sailors, led by King Alonso of Naples (David Strathairn) and his brother Sebastian (Chris Cooper), wash up on the island. Prospero is angered by their presence, and she conjures a storm to wreck their ship and strand them on the island.
The stranded sailors soon find themselves under Prospero’s control, and she uses her magic to manipulate them into doing her bidding. She also uses her magic to summon Ariel (Ben Whishaw) and Caliban (Djimon Hounsou), two powerful spirits who serve her.
Meanwhile, Prospero’s enemies, Antonio (Alfred Molina) and Sebastian, plan to overthrow Prospero and take control of the island. They enlist the help of Caliban, who has been promised his freedom if he helps them.
Prospero is determined to protect her daughter, and she uses her magic to create a magical masque. During
