Synopsis – What to Expect from “The Stranger”
The Stranger is a classic noir-style thriller released in 1946. The movie follows Wilson (Edward G. Robinson), a mysterious stranger who arrives in the small New England town of Harper, Connecticut. He quickly becomes the subject of suspicion and gossip among the townspeople, especially when it is revealed that he is a former Nazi official who is wanted for war crimes.
Wilson quickly becomes a target of the local police, led by the determined and uncompromising Inspector Charles Rankin (Orson Welles). Rankin is determined to uncover the truth about Wilson’s past and bring him to justice. As Rankin’s investigation intensifies, Wilson begins to develop a relationship with Mary Longstreet (Loretta Young), a local schoolteacher.
The tension in Harper increases as Rankin’s investigation progresses and Wilson’s past is slowly revealed. Wilson’s true identity is eventually revealed and Rankin discovers that he is in fact Franz Kindler, an infamous Nazi war criminal who has assumed a new identity in order to escape justice.
The movie culminates in a gripping courtroom scene as Rankin attempts to prove Kindler’s guilt and bring him to justice. In the end, Kindler is found guilty and sentenced to death. However, as he is being led away, he reveals to Mary that he has hidden a time bomb in the courtroom. The bomb explodes, killing Kindler and destroying the courtroom.
