The Spy Who Came in from the Cold is a 1965 British Cold War spy film based on the novel of the same name by John le Carré. The film stars Richard Burton as Alec Leamas, a British agent who is sent to East Germany as a faux defector to sow disinformation about a powerful East German intelligence officer.
The film opens with Alec Leamas (Burton) being dismissed from his post as head of the Berlin station of the British Secret Service. He is told to go home and take a holiday, but he instead embarks on a mission to discredit a powerful East German intelligence officer, Hans-Dieter Mundt (Oskar Werner).
Leamas is sent to East Germany, where he poses as a defector and is welcomed by the East German authorities. He quickly falls in love with a beautiful librarian, Liz Gold (Claire Bloom), who is unaware of his true identity. As he is interrogated by Mundt, Leamas is forced to reveal his true identity and mission.
Mundt arranges for Leamas to be arrested and sentenced to prison, but Liz comes to his rescue. She helps him escape and they flee to West Berlin, where Leamas is reunited with his old friend, Peter Guillam (Rupert Davies). Together, they devise a plan to expose Mundt and his network of spies.
Leamas and Liz travel to East Germany and infiltrate Mundt’s network. They uncover
