Synopsis – What to Expect from “The Song of Bernadette”
The Song of Bernadette is a 1943 American drama film based on the 1941 novel of the same name by Franz Werfel. It stars Jennifer Jones in the title role, and tells the story of Bernadette Soubirous, a young peasant girl who has visions of a beautiful lady in the cave of Massabielle near Lourdes, France.
The movie begins in the small French town of Lourdes in 1858. Bernadette Soubirous is a 14-year-old girl who lives with her family in poverty. One day, while gathering firewood, she has a vision of a beautiful lady in a cave near the town. Bernadette is the only one who can see the lady, and the news of her vision quickly spreads throughout the town.
The Church and the local government become suspicious of Bernadette and her visions, and begin to investigate her. Meanwhile, Bernadette is sent to a convent school, where she is ridiculed and ostracized by the other students. Despite this, she continues to have visions of the beautiful lady, and the townspeople begin to believe that the Lady is the Virgin Mary.
The Church sends in a team of scientists to investigate Bernadette and her visions, and they eventually conclude that the visions are real. The Church then declares the site of the visions to be a holy place, and thousands of pilgrims begin to visit it, hoping to be
