Synopsis/Plot
The Son is a 2019 French drama film written and directed by Jean-Pierre Dardenne and Luc Dardenne. The film follows the story of teenage outsider, Thomas, who is struggling to find his place in the world. After his mother dies, Thomas is taken in by his estranged father, who is a carpenter. His father is distant and uninvolved in Thomas’ life, and Thomas is left to fend for himself. He finds solace in the company of an elderly neighbour, Joseph, who is a retired carpenter.
Joseph takes Thomas under his wing and teaches him the carpentry trade. Through Joseph’s guidance, Thomas finds his place in the world and begins to understand his father and his ownidentity. As Thomas learns more about his father’s past, he begins to understand the pain and struggles he has endured. Thomas’ journey of self-discovery leads him to a newfound appreciation for his father and the world around him. The film follows Thomas’ journey as he learns to accept himself and his place in the world.
