Synopsis – What to Expect from “The Soloist”
The Soloist is a 2009 American drama film directed by Joe Wright and starring Jamie Foxx and Robert Downey Jr. The film is based on the true story of Nathaniel Ayers, a musician who developed a mental illness and ended up living on the streets of Los Angeles.
The story begins with journalist Steve Lopez (Robert Downey Jr.), a columnist for the Los Angeles Times, who discovers Nathaniel Ayers (Jamie Foxx) playing a two-stringed violin on the steps of the Los Angeles Central Library. Steve is amazed by Nathaniel’s passion and dedication, despite his homelessness and mental illness.
Steve decides to write a series of columns about Nathaniel’s life and his struggle. As the story progresses, Steve discovers that Nathaniel was once a world-class musician who attended the prestigious Juilliard School in New York. However, Nathaniel’s mental illness prevented him from continuing his studies.
Steve’s columns draw attention to Nathaniel’s plight and he soon finds himself the subject of media attention. He is offered a place to live at a shelter and is given a new two-stringed violin.
As the story progresses, Steve and Nathaniel’s friendship deepens as Steve helps Nathaniel get back on his feet. They eventually form a bond that transcends their differences.
