Synopsis – What to Expect from “The Shipping News”
The Shipping News is a 2001 drama film directed by Lasse Hallström, based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name by Annie Proulx.
The film follows the story of Quoyle (Kevin Spacey), a down-on-his-luck newspaper reporter who moves from New York City to his ancestral home in Newfoundland, Canada with his young daughter Bunny (Alyssa Milano) and aunt Agnis (Judi Dench). Quoyle is trying to start a new life away from his abusive ex-wife Petal (Cate Blanchett) and escape a life of mediocrity.
Upon arriving in Newfoundland, Quoyle finds work as a reporter for the local newspaper, The Gammy Bird, where he quickly discovers a knack for writing obituaries. He meets and befriends Wavey Prowse (Julianne Moore), a local woman who helps Quoyle find his footing in his new home.
As Quoyle adjusts to his new life in Newfoundland, he begins to uncover the secrets of his family’s past. He discovers that his ancestors were involved in the shipping industry and that his father had been a ship captain. Quoyle also learns that his father had died in a mysterious accident at sea. With the help of Wavey and his newfound knowledge of the shipping industry, Quoyle begins to piece together the mystery of his father’s death.
