Synopsis – What to Expect from “The Seven-Per-Cent Solution”
The Seven-Per-Cent Solution is a 1976 American mystery-thriller film directed by Herbert Ross and written by Nicholas Meyer. It is based on the novel of the same name by Meyer.
The film follows the story of Dr. John Watson (Robert Duvall), a former army doctor, who is concerned about his friend, Sherlock Holmes (Nicol Williamson). Holmes is an eccentric detective who has become obsessed with the case of the mysterious Professor Moriarty (Laurence Olivier). Watson seeks help from his mentor, Sigmund Freud (Alan Arkin), who suggests a radical solution: to take Holmes to Vienna and have him treated by one of Freud’s colleagues, Dr. Josef Breuer (Charles Gray).
In Vienna, Holmes and Watson meet Breuer, who uses hypnosis to help Holmes confront his inner demons and uncover the truth behind Moriarty’s mysterious activities. As Holmes begins to recover, he and Watson investigate the case further and unravel a web of deceit and murder that leads them to an unexpected and thrilling conclusion.
Along the way, the two also meet other colorful characters, including the beautiful Elizabeth (Vanessa Redgrave) and the sinister Count Von Kramm (Joel Grey). As the mystery deepens, Holmes and Watson must use their wits and courage to outwit their enemies and uncover the truth.
