Synopsis – What to Expect from “The Set-Up”
The Set-Up is a 1949 American film noir directed by Robert Wise and starring Robert Ryan and Audrey Totter.
The Set-Up tells the story of aging boxer Bill “Stoker” Thompson (Robert Ryan). Stoker is a fighter past his prime who is being manipulated by his manager, Tiny (George Tobias). Tiny has set up Stoker to take a dive in his next fight in exchange for a payoff. But Stoker has other plans. He wants to go the distance and prove he still has what it takes to be a top fighter.
The night before the fight, Stoker meets a young woman named Julie (Audrey Totter). He quickly falls for her and she helps him to stay focused on his goal. Meanwhile, Tiny is busy trying to make sure Stoker takes the dive. He hires a shady character named “Socks” (Alan Baxter) to make sure Stoker does what he’s supposed to.
The fight begins and Stoker is determined to go the distance. But Socks is there to make sure he takes the dive. Stoker is able to fend off Socks and keep on fighting, but the odds are stacked against him. In the end, Stoker is able to prove himself and goes the distance.
