The film follows the story of Will Stanton, a young boy who discovers he is the last of a group of warriors known as the “Old Ones”. The story begins with Will Stanton (Alexander Ludwig) celebrating his twelfth birthday with his family. On his birthday, he discovers that he is the last of the Old Ones, a group of warriors who have been charged with protecting the world from a powerful evil known as the Dark. He is also given the task of finding and protecting six magical Signs that will help him stop the Dark.
Will sets out on his quest, travelling to different places and encountering a variety of people who help him on his journey. He meets a mysterious old man, Merriman Lyon (Ian McShane), who tells him about the Signs and instructs him on how to use them.
Will also meets a group of children who are also Old Ones and helps them to battle the forces of the Dark. Along the way, they face a variety of challenges, including a powerful witch, a dragon, and a giant.
