Synopsis/Plot
The Secret Scripture is a 2016 Irish-British drama film directed by Jim Sheridan and based on the 2008 novel of the same name by Sebastian Barry. The film stars Rooney Mara, Vanessa Redgrave, and Eric Bana.
The film follows Roseanne McNulty (Redgrave), an elderly woman who is living in a mental institution in Ireland. When a new psychiatrist, Dr. Grene (Bana), arrives to assess her mental state, Roseanne begins to tell him her life story, beginning with her childhood in the 1920s and her courtship with a young man named Jack McNulty (Theo James). As Roseanne recounts her past, she reveals how she was wrongfully committed to the institution by her family and how she had to fight for her freedom.
The film is a powerful story of resilience and perseverance in the face of adversity, as Roseanne fights for her freedom and her right to tell her own story. Throughout the film, Roseanne’s story is juxtaposed with the story of her daughter, who was taken away from her when she was committed to the institution.
