Synopsis/Plot
The Scarlet Letter is a 1995 American romantic drama film directed by Roland Joffé and starring Demi Moore, Gary Oldman, and Robert Duvall. The film is based on the Nathaniel Hawthorne novel of the same name and follows the story of Hester Prynne, a young woman in 17th century Puritan Boston who is publicly shamed and ostracized after bearing an illegitimate child.
The film begins in the year 1642 in the Puritan settlement of Boston. Hester Prynne (Demi Moore) is an adulteress who has been sentenced to wear a scarlet letter “A” on her dress as a sign of her sin. She is publicly humiliated and ostracized by the townsfolk for her transgression. Hester is also forced to stand on the scaffold in the town square to endure further punishment and humiliation.
Meanwhile, Hester’s husband, Roger Chillingworth (Gary Oldman), has returned from England to seek revenge on the father of Hester’s child.
