Synopsis – What to Expect from “The Rum Diary”
The Rum Diary is a 2011 American comedy-drama film based on the novel of the same name by Hunter S. Thompson. The film follows an aspiring journalist, Paul Kemp, who moves to San Juan, Puerto Rico to write for a local newspaper.
Paul is a freelance writer who has been struggling to make ends meet in New York City. Desperate for work, he accepts a job offer from a shady newspaper editor, Lotterman, to work in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Paul quickly becomes embroiled in the colorful and eccentric characters of the city. He meets Sala, a wealthy businessman, who offers him a job to write a series of articles that will promote the island’s tourist industry.
Paul also meets Chenault, a beautiful woman who is the girlfriend of Sala’s business partner, Sanderson. Paul is immediately attracted to Chenault, and begins a passionate affair with her. However, Paul soon discovers that Sala and Sanderson are involved in a shady business deal that could have devastating consequences for the island.
Paul must decide whether to expose Sala and Sanderson’s corrupt business dealings, or to protect the island’s economy by keeping the story a secret. Along the way, Paul learns valuable lessons about friendship, loyalty, and the importance of standing up for what is right.
