Synopsis – What to Expect from “The Road to Wellville”
The Road to Wellville is a 1994 comedy-drama film directed by Alan Parker and starring Anthony Hopkins, Bridget Fonda, Matthew Broderick, John Cusack, and Dana Carvey.
The film follows the story of John Parker (Broderick), a young married man from the Midwest who is suffering from a variety of ailments. Desperate for a cure, he travels to Battle Creek, Michigan to visit the Battle Creek Sanitarium, a health spa owned and operated by the eccentric Dr. John Harvey Kellogg (Hopkins). At the sanitarium, John meets a variety of colorful characters, including the mysterious Mrs. Doubtfire (Fonda), the eternally optimistic Mrs. Loomis (Carvey), and the wealthy and eccentric Charles Ossining (Cusack).
At the sanitarium, John is subjected to a variety of bizarre treatments, including electric shock therapy, enemas, and a strict vegetarian diet. He also discovers that Dr. Kellogg is not only a health guru, but a genius inventor, and he is working on a revolutionary new breakfast cereal. As John attempts to find a cure for his ailments, he is also drawn into Dr. Kellogg’s world of bizarre treatments and inventions.
Meanwhile, John’s wife, Eleanor (Parker Posey), is dismayed by his absence and attempts to track him down. She eventually discovers the sanitarium and joins John there.
