Synopsis – What to Expect from “The Riot Club”
The Riot Club is a 2014 British drama film based on the play Posh by Laura Wade. The film follows two first-year students at Oxford who are invited to join the prestigious and exclusive Riot Club, an all-male dining society known for its wild parties and outrageous behavior.
The film opens with Miles (Max Irons) and Alistair (Sam Claflin) arriving at Oxford University, both eager to make their mark. Miles is the son of a working-class family, while Alistair is the son of a wealthy aristocrat. They are both invited to join the Riot Club, a secret all-male dining society known for its wild parties and outrageous behavior.
At the club’s initiation ceremony, Miles and Alistair are introduced to the other members, including the arrogant and privileged president, Hugo Fraser-Tyrwhitt (Douglas Booth). The initiation ritual involves the members drinking heavily and behaving recklessly. As the night progresses, tensions between the members escalate and they become increasingly destructive.
When the members take their debauchery to a local pub, they come into conflict with the locals and a brawl breaks out. Miles and Alistair try to stop the fight, but it is too late and the police arrive. Miles and Alistair are arrested, and the other members of the Riot Club are expelled.
In the aftermath, Miles and Alistair are forced to confront their own privilege and the consequences
