Synopsis/Plot
The Replacements is a 2000 American sports-comedy film directed by Howard Deutch and starring Keanu Reeves, Gene Hackman, Brooke Langton, and Orlando Jones. The movie follows a group of misfit replacement players who are brought together to finish the season for a professional football team, the Washington Sentinels, after the team’s regular players go on strike.
The movie opens with the Sentinels players on strike, and the team’s owner, Edward O’Neil (Gene Hackman), desperate to finish the season. He hires a former coach, Jimmy McGinty (Reeves), to assemble a team of replacement players, despite the fact that McGinty is a former convict. McGinty quickly assembles a ragtag team of misfits, including Shane Falco (Reeves), a former college quarterback who is now working as a riverboat gambler; Cliff “Mad Dog” Murdock (Jon Favreau), an ex-convict; Nigel “The Leg” Gruff (Rhys Ifans), a Welsh soccer player; Daniel “Danny” Bateman (Jonathon Loughran), a former child actor; and an aging cheerleader, Annabelle Farrell (
