Synopsis – What to Expect from “The Ref”
The Ref tells the story of Lloyd Chasseur (Denis Leary), a career criminal who has just robbed a jewelry store in Connecticut. After the robbery, Lloyd is pursued by the police and is forced to take a hostage, Caroline (Judy Davis). Caroline is a bickering couple on the verge of divorce, and Lloyd hopes to use Caroline as a shield to protect himself from the police.
Lloyd forces Caroline to drive him to her home, where he meets her husband, Gus (Kevin Spacey). Lloyd decides to stay with the couple and use them as his hostages until the heat from the robbery dies down. As the night progresses, Lloyd begins to realize that the couple’s marriage is on the brink of collapse and he finds himself playing the role of a marriage counselor.
Lloyd’s presence forces the couple to confront the issues in their marriage, and he begins to meddle in their lives, offering his own unique advice on how to save their marriage. As the night progresses, Lloyd develops a strange bond with the couple and even helps them to patch up their differences.
The Ref is a darkly humorous comedy that examines the complexities of marriage and relationships. The film is both funny and touching, as it follows the unlikely trio on a journey of self-discovery. Through Lloyd’s interactions with Gus and Caroline, we learn that even a criminal can help to bring out the best in people.
