The story follows Michael Berg, a 15-year-old schoolboy who falls in love with a mysterious older woman, Hanna Schmitz, played by Winslet. After a brief affair, Hanna disappears from his life. Eight years later, Michael is a law student and he discovers that Hanna is on trial for war crimes. He begins to uncover the details of her past, which leads him to confront his own feelings of guilt and responsibility.
