Synopsis – What to Expect from “The Rapture”
The Rapture is a 1991 American drama film written and directed by Michael Tolkin. It stars Mimi Rogers as Sharon, a bored telephone operator who embarks on a spiritual journey of self-discovery and redemption.
The movie begins with Sharon, a bored telephone operator, living a mundane life in the suburbs of Los Angeles. She is in a loveless marriage and has a young daughter, but feels spiritually empty. One day, while out for a drive, she meets a man who introduces her to a fundamentalist Christian group who believe in the imminent end of the world.
Sharon is initially skeptical of the group’s beliefs, but as she spends more time with them, she is drawn in by their conviction and begins to embrace their faith. She eventually leaves her husband and daughter and joins the group, becoming a devoted follower of its leader.
As the group awaits the Rapture, Sharon begins to have doubts about her decision and begins to question her faith. She eventually realizes that the Rapture is not coming and that the group’s beliefs are misguided. She must then decide whether to stay with the group and try to save them, or to leave and try to save herself.
The Rapture is a powerful and thought-provoking exploration of faith, doubt, and the power of belief. It is a stirring and emotionally charged drama that will stay with you long after the credits roll.
