Synopsis/Plot
The Purge: Election Year is a 2016 American horror action thriller film written and directed by James DeMonaco and starring Frank Grillo, Elizabeth Mitchell, and Mykelti Williamson. Set in the year 2040, the film follows a former police sergeant and his new protégé as they battle against a violent political uprising in the midst of a national election.
The story follows Leo Barnes (Frank Grillo), a former police sergeant who is now working for Senator Charlie Roan (Elizabeth Mitchell), a presidential candidate running on a platform of ending the annual Purge, a 12-hour period in which all crime is legal. As the election nears, the New Founding Fathers of America, a powerful political partyseeking to protect their power, attempt to assassinate Roan. Barnes and his team must fight to protect Roan and ensure that her message of ending the Purge is heard. Along the way, they must battle a violent political uprising that seeks to keep the Purge in place and maintain the New Founding Fathers’ power. With the help of Joe Dixon (Mykelti Williamson), a store owner and former Marine, Barnes and Roan must fight to protect themselves and the future of the nation.
