Synopsis – What to Expect from “The Proposition”
The Proposition is a 2005 Australian western drama set in the 1880s in the Australian Outback. It stars Guy Pearce, Ray Winstone, Emily Watson, and Danny Huston.
The story follows the Burns brothers, Charlie and Mikey, who are wanted outlaws in the Australian Outback. They are captured and brought to justice by the British-appointed Captain Stanley, who offers them an ultimatum: Charlie must kill his older brother, the notorious outlaw Arthur Burns, or Mikey will be hanged.
Charlie reluctantly agrees to the proposition, but soon discovers that Arthur is actually his older brother. He must now decide whether to go through with the proposition or find a way to save both himself and his brother.
Meanwhile, Captain Stanley is struggling with his own inner demons as he is torn between his duty as a lawman and his personal feelings for the beautiful and mysterious Martha, who is also Arthur’s lover.
The tension mounts as Charlie and Mikey try to evade capture and the Burns brothers prepare for a showdown with the law. In the end, the fate of the brothers and the Outback hangs in the balance as Charlie must make a decision that will affect not only his own life, but the lives of those he loves.
