Synopsis/Plot
The Professor and the Madman is a 2019 drama film directed by Farhad Safinia and starring Mel Gibson and Sean Penn. It is based on the true story of Professor James Murray, who was the editor of the Oxford English Dictionary, and Dr. William Minor, a madman who made a huge contribution to the dictionary from his cell in an insane asylum.
The story begins in the late 19th century when Professor Murray is tasked with creating the Oxford English Dictionary. He sends out a call for volunteers to help him compile the dictionary, and he receives thousands of responses. Among them is Dr. Minor, an American Civil War veteran who has been institutionalized in an insane asylum in London. Despite his mental illness, Professor Murray recognizes Minor’s genius and begins to correspond with him.
The film follows the two men as they develop a friendship built on a mutual respect for language and literature. Professor Murray is impressed by Minor’s vast knowledge of obscure words and his dedication to the project. Minor, in turn, finds solace in their conversations and is inspired by Murray’s enthusiasm for the project.
As the dictionary nears completion, the two men must face the reality that their friendship will soon come to an end.
