Synopsis – What to Expect from “The Prince and the Showgirl”
The Prince and the Showgirl is a romantic comedy set in London in the summer of 1911. It tells the story of an American showgirl, Elsie Marina (Marilyn Monroe), who is hired to perform at a gala for the visiting Prince Regent of Carpathia, played by Laurence Olivier. The Prince is in London to negotiate a political treaty and is accompanied by his entourage of courtiers and advisers. Elsie is immediately taken with the Prince, but he is unimpressed by her charms and is more interested in the political situation.
Meanwhile, Elsie’s friend and fellow showgirl, Maisie, is involved with an unscrupulous businessman who is trying to exploit Elsie’s naivety and use her to gain access to the Prince. Elsie is warned to stay away from the businessman, but is determined to pursue her dream of becoming a princess.
The Prince and Elsie eventually develop a mutual attraction and the Prince begins to take Elsie seriously. He is also impressed with her intelligence and wit. The two begin to spend time together and the Prince begins to fall in love with Elsie. However, his courtiers and advisers are not happy with the situation and try to dissuade him from pursuing a relationship with her.
