Synopsis/Plot
The Post is a 2017 American historical drama film directed by Steven Spielberg, and written by Liz Hannah and Josh Singer. The film stars Meryl Streep as Katharine Graham, the first female publisher of a major American newspaper, and Tom Hanks as Ben Bradlee, the longtime executive editor of The Washington Post, with Sarah Paulson, Bob Odenkirk, Tracy Letts, Bradley Whitford, Bruce Greenwood, and Matthew Rhys in supporting roles.
The story follows the journalists of The Washington Post as they uncover the massive cover-up of government secrets that spanned three decades and four U.S. Presidents. It shows how Graham and Bradlee, along with their staff, must come together to fight for the freedom of the press and the public’s right to know.
The Post is set in 1971, during the Vietnam War, and centers on the Washington Post’s decision to publish the Pentagon Papers. The papers, leaked by military analyst Daniel Ellsberg, revealed the extent of the U.S. government’s knowledge of the Vietnam War and its lies to the public.
The film follows the Washington Post’s legal battle to publish the papers, despite the government’s attempts to suppress them.
