Synopsis – What to Expect from “The Poker House”
The Poker House is a 2008 American drama film written and directed by Lori Petty. It is based on Petty’s own childhood and follows three sisters who must fend for themselves while their mother is in a downward spiral of drugs and prostitution.
The film opens with Agnes (Jennifer Lawrence) on her way to school. She is a smart and independent young woman, but her home life is anything but normal. Her mother Sarah (Selma Blair) is a drug-addicted prostitute who spends her time at the local poker house. Agnes’ older sisters, Bee (Bokeem Woodbine) and Cammie (Chloë Grace Moretz), are also forced to grow up too quickly as they take care of their mother and themselves.
At school, Agnes is the target of bullies and is often embarrassed by her mother’s lifestyle. She finds solace in her best friend, Lori (Sophi Bairley), who is also dealing with her own struggles at home. Agnes also finds comfort in her teacher, Mrs. Burke (Beverly D’Angelo), who takes an interest in her well-being.
Meanwhile, Agnes’ sisters are dealing with their own issues. Bee is trying to make a living by dealing drugs, while Cammie is struggling with her own identity and sexuality.
