Synopsis – What to Expect from “The Pit and the Pendulum”
The Pit and the Pendulum is a 1961 horror film directed by Roger Corman. The film is based on the classic Edgar Allan Poe story of the same name.
The story follows Francis Barnard (John Kerr) as he visits the castle of his sister Elizabeth’s (Barbara Steele) husband Nicholas Medina (Vincent Price). Elizabeth has died suddenly, and Francis is determined to find out what happened to her.
The castle is a dark and mysterious place, and Francis soon discovers the truth behind Elizabeth’s death. Nicholas is a member of the Spanish Inquisition and has been using the castle to torture and execute heretics. Elizabeth was one of his victims, killed in the castle’s torture chamber.
Francis is horrified by what he finds, but he is determined to rescue Elizabeth’s soul from the clutches of the Inquisition. He soon finds himself trapped in the castle’s torture chamber, with a giant pendulum swinging above him. He must find a way to escape before the pendulum slices him in two.
With the help of a mysterious old man (Antony Carbone), Francis is able to escape the chamber and try to save Elizabeth’s soul. He must face the Inquisition’s forces, as well as the supernatural forces that inhabit the castle.
Will Francis be able to save Elizabeth’s soul and escape the castle alive? Or will he succumb to the horrors of the Pit and the Pendulum?
