Synopsis – What to Expect from “The Pirates of Somalia”
The Pirates of Somalia is a 2017 crime drama film directed by Bryan Buckley and based on the true story of Canadian journalist Jay Bahadur’s experiences in Somalia.
The movie follows Jay Bahadur (Evan Peters) as he travels to Somalia in order to write a book about the local pirates. Despite the danger, Jay is determined to get the story, and he soon finds himself embedded with a group of Somali pirates led by the charismatic and dangerous Afweyne (Barkhad Abdi).
As Jay spends more time with the pirates, he begins to understand their motivations and realizes that they are not the monsters he expected them to be. He also forms a friendship with Afweyne and starts to see the world from the pirates’ perspective.
Meanwhile, the US Navy is attempting to crack down on the pirates, and they enlist the help of a local warlord, Mohamed Farole (Abdiwali Farrah), to help them. Farole is determined to rid the region of the pirates, but his methods are often brutal and indiscriminate.
Jay must decide whether to stay with the pirates and protect them from Farole, or to leave and write a book that will expose their plight. In the end, he decides to stay and help the pirates, and the movie ends with a dramatic showdown between Farole and the pirates, with Jay in the middle.
The Pirates of Somalia is a thrilling and thought-provoking
