Synopsis – What to Expect from “The Phenom”
The Phenom is a 2016 psychological sports drama film directed by Noah Buschel. The film follows Hopper Gibson (Ethan Hawke), a once-promising Major League Baseball pitcher whose career is on the decline.
The story begins with Hopper’s first game of the season. His performance is abysmal, and he is pulled from the game by his coach. Later, Hopper visits a sports psychologist, Dr. Mobley (Paul Giamatti), to help him get back on track. Dr. Mobley soon discovers that Hopper’s issues are rooted in his troubled past.
Hopper had a difficult relationship with his father, a former minor league ballplayer, who was abusive and demanding. He was also very critical of Hopper’s baseball career, which only made matters worse. Hopper’s father passed away when he was young, and the unresolved issues between them still haunt Hopper.
With the help of Dr. Mobley, Hopper begins to work through his issues. He begins to open up and talk about his past and his relationship with his father. As Hopper works through his issues, he begins to improve on the mound. He starts to regain his confidence and begins to pitch better.
Meanwhile, Hopper’s relationships with his teammates and coaches begin to improve. He also begins to reconnect with his mother and sister, who he had been estranged from for many years.
